When I was a kid, I generally thought of him as the goofy country bumpkin who hosted Hee Haw. As I grew a little older and wiser, I came to understand that he was one of the most skilled guitarist (as well as a number of other string instruments) that I'd ever have the pleasure to see & hear.
I'm sad that he's gone; I'm glad there are numerous recordings & videos through which he'll live on for an eternity. I'm regretful that I never took advantage of an opportunity to see him perform in person; that was a big mistake on my part.
