Heard a GREAT remembrance of Fats on NPR yesterday... worth looking up. His home in the 9th Ward was a destination for his fans and piano players everywhere who wanted to visit him. Not only was Fats gracious with fans stopping by for autographs, he would regularly play a tune or two for them! What a guy.

If you're on the Facebook, English expat / longtime New Orleans resident / upholder of all things New Orleans piano Jon Cleary, has a heartfelt remembrance of visiting Fats in his later years.

I did see him perform, once. It was at Jazz Fest in New Orleans, in 1999. Took my wife there for a week, our first visit to the Jazz Fest. The first weekend Sunday was Piano Day... at the main stage (Ray-Ban stage back then), the day's lineup was N.O. stalwart and always entertaining Eddie Bo, then Dr. John, followed by Ray Charles and his Orchestra (and the Raelettes of course!), and finally Fats Domino. WOW. What a day. Just a huge dance party out there on the field for Fats.

WATCH THIS! Fats and co., in Holland... looks to be from the 1970s. Fats sexy bumps his GRAND PIANO ACROSS THE STAGE. Never misses a note. Such joyfulness.

Fly free, Fats. Thank you for all the fantastic music. :D :D :D
