In 2005, The Colonel and ARU were playing Skipper's. While they were playing an intense Lovelight, an acquaintance from SOSMP came up and informed me of the passing of Vassar Clements. Since then Lovelight, especially from Col. Bruce has held a special significance for me...

Vaylor Trucks posted an incredibly poignant piece on his blog:

http://vaylor.info/post/160227416520/brato-ganibe

Quote:
In orthodoxy lies stagnation. This is something Col. Bruce Hampton, Ret. knew and, I suspect, knew instinctively. Col. Bruce had an implicit understanding of the orthodoxies of the music he asked the musicians around him to create, and, like Miles Davis or Lou Reed, he knew what buttons to press to keep those musicians from sinking too deep in how music is “supposed to be played”, thereby freeing their creativity to actually create something new.

Bruce has been a part of my family’s life for as long as I’ve been alive, and my gratitude to him is boundless. It is because he introduced Derek to Sun Ra that Derek was able to hear it. Because Duane came up through the Hampton farm system he’s now with both Hard Working Americans and Widespread Panic. He introduced me to Eric Sanders - and for that alone I have unending gratitude.

As I sit and reflect on the fact that we now live in a world without him, I cannot help but wonder if it was all a large performance art piece: the numerology, the astrology, the vocabulary, the in jokes and secret codes, and especially the fact that, for nearly 30 years, his musical direction was to take the same set of songs and, like a kind of jam-band SNL, perform them with a succession of young musicians; loosing them upon the world one by one. It’s almost as if he chose a set of arbitrary consistencies solely for the purpose of pointing out the absurdity of ANY consistency in artistic endeavors. A sort of Krishnamurti of music, perhaps.

…or am I just full of s#%t (and isn’t that the point anyway)?

“If you find Earth boring, just the same old same thing…”

I've never reacted to anyone's death with so much joy. If he could have scripted his own passing, I'm pretty sure it would have been pretty close to what happened! The man died on stage, during the encore(not the middle of the show...THE ENCORE), at the Fox Theater, surrounded by those he loved and loved him! Jam on Bruce...You are now truly OUT! 8-)

Here's a link to an old story we did on Bruce in the early days of The Codetalkers.

Nice, Casey, the reporter remembered to give you a credit! :D

The Codetalkers was the first outfit I saw the Col with, and I'm pretty sure that was my first exposure to Bobby Lee Rodgers too. Saw the Codetalkers in a little joint in Delray Beach. Way killer of course.

Freakin' time flies... and kaka happens as that time goes sailing along...

I gotta go work on that gratitude thing again :|

A silver lining for sure... although I think I'd prefer to be fast asleep.

when I go, I want to go in my sleep like my Grandfather....not screaming like the 32 passengers on his bus
