I know you record a lot of shows. I have downloaded several audience recordings from bittorrent and such. Does FLAC make a difference since most audience recordings pale compared to most soundboard recordings? I just wanted your opinion if it is really an audible difference compared to just an MP3.

Sorry for the late reply! Setting up here at Camp Volke. We now have WiFi, so I fired the lappy up.

Is an audible difference? Oh heck yes. You dont lose 90% of the sound information without a penalty.

Does it make a difference? Well... sometimes not. Having a high bitrate recording is a waste of space if you are going to bluetooth it to a speaker. Bluetooth is capable of bitrates up to about 328 kbps at a 44.1kHz sampling rate (source). This is not far off from the maximum for mp3 encoding, though mp3 is superior to SBC in terms of audio quality given similar bitrates. So a 320 MP3 would be all you need. Maybe less.

If you are listening at home in a well thought out area, with a good chain of devices, the difference between MP3 and lossless (flac, wav, etc) can be startling. The drums come alive, horns are brighter, the whole darn thing sounds... well... LIVE!

So yeah, for 99% of people, MP3 is just fine. For those that have a computer for storage, with a nice 24 bit 96Khz digital to analog converter, and a calibrated listening area... it is night and day.

The other issue is that since "nobody" needs lossless, MP3's become the only source you can find. Thats why you may find tapers posting saying 'do NOT make MP3's from this'.

Hope that clarifies things for you. MP3's are not bad, and do fit a need. But it is only a fraction of the music.
