Post Very Important Joe Russo's Almost Dead Question!
Is Joe Russo's Almost Dead the best "Grateful Dead-based ensemble" since Jerry died? Serious question. And I'm not just talking the cover bands like DSO, I mean ANY GD ensemble include bands that have original Dead members (Billy and the Kids, any Bobby outfit, "The Dead" with Warren, Phil and Friends, Dead and Co, and dare I say even Furthur???). Musically, I think its hard to say that they are not the best since we lost Jerry. Furthur has more of the original GD sound, and GD 50 with Trey was fantastic, but JRAD does things that none of those bands could ever do.

The Wheel =

Intense debate, being right about NOW....

JRAD does do justice to the improve that TGD was known for, no argument. Jazz Is Dead,as an instrumental interpretation that I feel has a lot of merit too!

JRad is killer and last weekend with Oteil was on fire, but they are still a cover band. Dead & Co gets my vote as the best since Jerry and I've seen every single version since Jerry passed (and over 65 with Jerry) so I do know the GD. :)
That being said -- I'm super stoked to see Jrad at Fool's Paradise next weekend!!!!

The Best?

To me, there is no correct answer. It changes based on context. As in, the best this morning, or later in the car, or at the campsite. Different time of day, set, and setting all influence the answer.

That being said, JRAD will melt the face. They go into some darker or scarier places then the Dead (GD) ever would. They're heavier and more aggressive. I come from Punk Rock roots, so I love it... but it's not really a Jerry thing.

I'd still go with the Phil Lesh quintet, Dead & Co. close second. JRAD is great though. Great improv.

If I HAD to narrow it down to one, my overall favorite might of been the last "The Other Ones"/the 1st "The Dead"... with Jimmy Herring, but before Warren.

Fantastic Scarlet/Fire from JRAD: https://youtu.be/cy7QdOdgzN4

Perhaps.
