61 years old - My wife and I plan to attend - I dont do much camping - I am wondering what to expect - I went to several festivals in 70s and wonder how this will compare - I have been playing drums for 49 years and look forward to the music - what should I know about this event as a first timer
Several things you should know...
1) we are all getting older. When you stop, there IS the problem.
2) Camping is still camping. It hasn't changed in a thousand years....that is, unless you have a RV with all the bells and whistles. Camping in a tent is still camping in a tent....hot when it is hot....cold when it is cold...and not like sleeping in your bed.
3) You are among the friendliest campers/festies in the country.
4) Festivals haven't changed much either. That being said....Wanee is probably the best of the bunch. While there aren't the long line of Super Stars that bring in a hundred thousand....there are enough core stars (ABB family) to really make it enjoyable. Plus, we like it smaller and more intimate. Half the fun is being with the other campers.
5) Read the entry for first timers....a lot of good information to be had. Some is a little misleading but if you read thoroughly enough the truth will come out.
6) You are among friends....everywhere you go....friends. We are all accessible and willing to help....if you need to know something....just ask, if you forgot something...someone will have it and loan to you.
7) Talk to your neighbors...they are just like you. New friendships will be developed and carried forth to the next festie.
8) There is a meet&greet for folks just like you. Many have been since the beginning and others for the first or second time. It is open to virgins as well as old hats.
9) You have picked the best festival to begin with and will surely enjoy and come back for more.
10) You can listen to samples of music by each group from the band page....just listen and you will have an idea of what "you must hear" and what you might want to pass up.
11) Pace yourself...you can't catch it all....and you can't miss being with others.
12) Bring an instrument if you play....(not a whole drum set)...there is camp music all over
