I've always hated those fire lanterns. Sure they look pretty going up....you just never know where those suckers might come down and what damage may be the result.

Their key to success is at the time of launch. Do not launch in windy conditions. And use auxiliary heat source to get a straight up and above the tree line in a hurry launch.
I've seen them when they float down, out of fuel. Other than litter, they are harmless.
That said, I won't bring any to Wanee. Conditions will most likely not be ideal middle of April.

Thanks mr wizard now I can break the rules safely. This is a thoughtless post where you can try and show that you know better than the authorities!

I try to be thoughtful.
Sorry I don't live up to your expectations.

I was never much for people setting fireworks off in a crowd...... scares the s#%t out of me of what could happen.... At least Spyderstan sounds like he knows what he's doing :D

Thanks, I do.
And BTW, I had no plans to launch any at Wanee. Mr. Authority can relax.

Won't do it but... All Good 2010 WSP set break was insane. Like a thousand of them went up. One of the craziest looking things I've seen. I like to think they all burnt out before touch down. And hopefully they all landed in some guys front yard who woke up the next morning and went WTF! But I won't do any of that. Promise.

And yeah, fireorks in crowds is just stupid.

that was an awesome All Good! I remember my buddy in vip say "hey look at that"
looked like stars covered the sky flowing in a stream of wind, it was magically.

DARN!! I have been hauling around a bunch of them to every festival i go too and have never been able to launch due to dry or windy conditions. I was totally planning on bringing them this year. Glad I checked and saved myself the trouble of hauling them around yet again!!

One of these days..somehow, somewhere.....I will launch them and it will be AMAZING :D

Post Re: Help with fire prevention at the SOSMP
I loved the lanterns and that was one of the most memorable events during our first wanee in 2010.....I think ABB was playing "Dreams" and all of a sudden we noticed all the lights lifting out from the crowd, I was mesmerized by it, but then I asked my husband if he thought we should go and check the camper area since the wind seemed to drift the lanterns in the general direction of the loop.....they did continue to rise up above the trees, and we relaxed thinking that there would be no hazard since it seemed that no one interfered with the launching of the lanterns....

My husband and I were avid hikers and campers before his illness, and we have been in several wilderness situations where a fire would be a bad thing. Jerry is very conscientious in making sure a fire is banked properly and put out when we are not around. If the park is asking for cooperation in the lantern lighting, I think we should all take a moment and act accordingly. They are not really asking for much, and even though one may be considered an expert....hell, I am one for that matter, enough whiskey, matches and dry tender can start a hell of a fire...and I love to watch the flames burn....but if they are asking for cooperation, I think that the right thing to do would be to do as they ask. Flames and fire can certainly outrun a man, let alone a short, fat woman like myself................just my honest and humble opinion.....and btw, noone is right or wrong on the subject, it is the park asking for cooperation

That is all ...T minus 9 hours and 34 minutes til southbound
